SBRC is the abbreviation for Statistics and Bioinformatics Research Center. It was founded in 2019.
The motivation comes from the fact that Indonesia is very rich in variation and diversity in terms of economy, culture, social and biodiversity. In Statistics variations are the important aspects, because without variation then decision making based on statistical methods will not be required.
The statistical methods have been evoluted from conventional to be based-on technology oriented, whether information technology or data-produced technology such as microarray and sequencing.
Information technology provides huge data which is available in a short time and in various forms, which is known as BIG DATA. Data does not have to be in numerical or numbers. Figures, colour, shape and some certain items are the real data which contain information that needs to be discovered and elaborated.
Technology development in molecular biology, microarray and sequencing technologies, makes research data in life sciences grow rapidly and need the non-conventional statistical methods. Based on these technologies researchers can do research on hundreds even million genes in one experiment. In the previous occasion they can investigate several genes only.
Indonesia’s biodiversity has been known and acknowledged by Indonesian and others. Research on genes, protein and metabolism levels of this biodiversity are not handled systematically yet, incorporating the advancement of statistical methods and the technologies, because in Indonesia the bioinformatics and microarray/sequencing technologies are not popular yet.
Bioinformatics is a branch of knowledge where statistics, mathematics, computer science, physics, biology, pharmacy, medics and chemistry are involved. Applying bioinformatics on biodiversity research in Indonesia through genomics, proteomics and metabolomics, will give a significant contribution on food sufficiency and security, improvement of health quality: discovery of drugs for certain diseases and health services, as well as preventive actions through targeted planning with technological engineering.
Applying statistics in economics, culture and sosial will give a positive contributions on decision making and policy maker at local and national government levels. The assurance of data validity and reliability used for analysis is strategically important.
Non conventional statistical methods, known as statistical learning methods --in computer science is known as data mining or machine learning-- are the appropriate methods to analyse BIG DATA. Therefore, it is important to establish the SBRC.
